My school does an amazing job at making use of the resources we are given, but at times those resources are not specific enough to our needs. Our campus is doing such amazing work that multiple grants have been given to researchers to conduct research on our classrooms that teach writing through the writer's workshop method. The workshop-style is rooted in the idea of teaching through strong student voice and a focus on teaching the "writers" instead of state-testing style test prep writing. Our grade level would like to focus one of the units next year on capturing our oral families’ stories and histories. We know that we need more specific tools to make this writing unit possible. In order to have students explore their deep family roots, we will be focusing on capturing family stories using voice recorders and sharing their stories with the community. We need your help to obtain these voice recorders and writing supplies in order to have a successful year. Students need all these tools (journals, folders, etc.) in order to have a successful year. I have also selected a couple of my favorite mentor texts that I will use in workshop lessons that are not available at our library or at our public library. Please help us to make this unit possible! We want to treasure the voices of our families and capture them for generations to come!
