These puzzle cubes are identical to that first puzzle. One of my colleagues had nothing positive to say to his mother, so he mentioned that her son had solved my puzzle in 30 seconds. I was going to give the puzzle to him at the end of the year, but he couldn't wait and stole the puzzle. 14 years later, I ran into my former colleague and he told me that he had recently spoke with that student. He remembered solving that puzzle and mentioned he still had it. Another student, (an immigrant from Guatemala), solved the 6 different puzzle cubes and 7 metal puzzles in one class! I spoke with his guidance counselor about getting him enrolled in auto mechanics at our VocEd center. He completed the VocEd program and found a job with a local auto mechanic where the owner/manager spoke his language and helped acclimate him to our community. Since I began teaching problem solving strategies as part of Discrete Mathematics I have found a new use for these puzzles. By analyzing the number of possible connections, we can limit the total possible combinations and solve them faster. We use combinatorics and we create a testing procedure to help those that couldn't solve the cube do so. My collection is down to one as pieces have been lost, and a class set would be great.
