Many of my students have never held a digital camera, instead they use phones and tablets to take pictures. What would it be like to never hold a camera? Would you know what hand to use to hold the camera and how to steady it? Would you know what buttons to press to snap the picture? How do you zoom in and out without a touch screen? These are all things I have discovered that my students cannot do since they are growing up in the age of touchscreen technology. Introducing digital cameras to my students will allow me to teach my students photography, how to create a digital portfolio, and photorealism. Students will not only learn the basic skills of how to take pictures with the camera but also how to incorporate those pictures into mixed media works of art. Students will see their progress over time through the use of a digital portfolio. Students will learn about artists how use photography, such as Chuck Close and Kehinde Wiley, to help them explore photorealism and ways photography can influence creativity in their own artwork and the work of others.
