I want to help my students build their confidence and self-worth. Working with special education students, I find that students start to recognize when they are not at the same level academically as their peers. I want to bridge the gap by giving my students every opportunity possible to be independent. With the alphabet, days of the week and seasons rug this will engage our non-verbal students by giving them an opportunity to participate that they otherwise would not have. I will also use this rug to create interactive games as a whole class and also generalize these important concepts to my students. I will use the sunshine bundle to create an interactive calendar wall that will be engaging as well as student-led. I will use the daily schedule pocket chart to give them the visuals they need to succeed and stay on task. This will also help prepare the students for schedule changes that might occur. Working with students with autism the need for schedules, behavior charts and visual representations of lessons is huge and we use a ton of laminate. I would also like to create a sense of independence by giving them baskets, file holders and table dots to give them the opportunity to put away, go to, deliver, etc. As a special education teacher who works with students with Autism and Intellectual disabilities, I am a huge advocate for each child having the right to communicate and access the same materials their grade level peers do. This is where books are so important. Finding appealing books is imperative to their success. With the books selected I put careful thought to align them with their curriculum, goals, and needs. I truly believe these materials will create a lot of success for my students!
