Being able to offer my students flexible seating options will enhance their learning experience in 3rd grade. My class is considered "gifted and talented" and follow a special supplemental curriculum that relies heavily on discussion with peers and collaboration. With flexible seating in the classroom, students will be able to more easily move around the classroom to work in groups and have discussion with their peers. Students will be more comfortable in the classroom as well, resulting in more interest and longer attention spans. Studies have shown the difficulties that students have sitting in hard chairs for extended periods of time. Offering flexible seating options will encourage students to find their own learning styles and what works best for them. While we are responsible to teach curriculum, teachers are also trying to teach students about themselves and taking ownership in their own learning. Flexible seating options will help transform my classroom into a place where students begin to take ownership of their own learning. Why should we stay the same when the world all around is changing? Workspaces are evolving into more flexible spaces, so why not school? Flexible seating is a piece to the puzzle of creating a 21st century learner.
