Early in the year, I spend a great deal of time teaching students how to work together and form a community of learners. I am a strong believer in literature-based lessons, and I will use these books to help guide our daily “check-in” time. Initially, we stress how each of us is an individual, with our strengths and gifts, and different talents. By using thematic literature (‘The Kindness Pack’ and similar books), I lead student discussions about empathy and acceptance, and how teamwork can help them achieve. These themes are visited throughout the year, and the books I’ve used in previous lessons always get revisited by students. The art pack materials will be used in conjunction with other student self-expression art projects (including an “All About Me” poster project we do during the first month.) In my years of teaching, I have found students of this younger age group often don’t have the communicative vocabulary to discuss and share interpersonal experiences. I plan to use the “Kindness Pack” books to help teach students these basic communication skills. This unit, focusing on kindness and community building, helps set the tone for a welcome and accepting learning environment throughout the rest of the year.
