Sensory bins are a hands-on tactile learning experience for my students. They are in a contained space with small materials. Students get their hands in so they can play, dig, scrape, and dump. This helps us incorporate fine motor, language, and social skills into their day. Students get to explore their world through different fillers, materials, and textures. They are also calming to my students and offer great language development experiences. Sensory bins are fun, engaging, and easy to differentiate for all ability levels. In our class project, we are asking for a large sensory bin with a lid to hold different materials that I will change out monthly. In October when we learn about the farm, we will have popcorn kernels with farm animals and tractors. In November we will change to fall leaves and acorns. Then in December, we will switch to red and green pom-poms with small Christmas ornaments. Sensory bins allow students to play and be social. Through play, students are able to come together to celebrate and learn respect for diversity in our classroom. Tactile learning allows for great conversations and most importantly sensory bins are learning made FUN!
