These materials will help teachers create a safe place in the classroom. Safe places are designated spots in the classroom students can retreat to when they are feeling sad, angry, or overwhelmed. Often times these emotions lead to classroom disturbances and then consequences. Safe places normalize feelings in students and provide a place where they can go to self-regulate their emotions. This outlet not only teaches students how to regulate their emotions, but provides a way to keep them in the classroom to do so. When emotions are regulated, students make better choices and are able to process new learning. This promotes growth at school and at home, benefitting their families, friends, and communities.
