We desperately need a carpet to have our shared reading and learning time. In our room we previously had carpet but it was old and needing replacing. Luckily the school was able to afford to replace our old carpet with tile this summer but that left us with no comfortable spot to sit in the floor and learn together. We spend much of our day at this special class space doing activities such as shared reading, math talks, calendar, read alone or partner reading, book talks, and so much more! This carpet we have chosen is special because it will help us learn community as well as having individualized spaces that are ours helping us learn the social skill of personal space. It will also help us learn the alphabet, phonics skills, and numeration straight from the carpet since it has the alphabet, numbers, and picture sound clues printed on the carpet. I can already imagine my students playing a game of “find it” on the carpet where they must take turns finding the letter I call and standing on it or a game where I give them a picture card and they find the letter that matches the sound the picture starts with. In math we could play games where we count items and then find the number on the carpet that represents the amount. There are numerous ways this carpet will make our classroom a better learning environment. We hope to be able to try all of them out this year!
