Research shows that the average poor child has few, if any, books in their home. A deep classroom library will enable my students to broaden their knowledge and experience by discovering the world and words through books.
It would be a joy to gift a student with being whisked away to an unknown place or experience through reading. Books would make some of the experiences they do not enjoy, because they are poor, become real. Worlds such as those portrayed by Roald Dahl, Judy Blume and Eric Carle would be an integral component of our Reading Center, where students go for Read to Self or Read To Someone.
