In our preschool classroom, we spend a lot of time learning how to be a good friend to others. This begins with learning how to recognize different emotions in ourselves and others and learning how to regulate the way we feel. Young children can have pretty big emotions. It is important that we teach them these feelings are okay and give them tools to be able to handle the different emotions they experience. With this project, my students will learn about different emotions through play opportunities and be able to use tools in our calm down corner to help manage their feelings. As children learn to recognize emotions in others, they are able to recognize what may be the cause to those feelings. This awareness helps to build friendships and a strong sense of community in the classroom. My preschoolers will be able to practice sharing, taking-turns and cooperative skills as they work to put puzzles together and complete the emotions matching game. When strong feelings arise, they can utilize the tools in the calm down corner to calm themselves down before returning to their play.
