I'm very excited to start my first year of teaching this fall. Most of my students are from households of low socioeconomic status that do not speak English as a first language. I want to give my students a classroom library filled with books that contain characters from varying backgrounds where they will be able to see themselves reflected in the characters. This will increase their interest in reading and their comprehension skills since they will be able to connect with these characters. When I arrived to this country as a 7-year-old immigrant from Haiti, I felt overwhelmed and out of place. I would have loved to see more girls who looked like me in the stories we read in school. My students will gain a love of reading and a better sense of belonging through this diverse, welcoming classroom library.
