I am a first-year teacher. Many things go into providing a solid educational experience for even the most diverse of classrooms. Some essential tools are provided by the school; however, most teachers build upon the materials year after year until their collection is complete. Even then, any good collection will need updating. Providing a welcoming environment my students will feel comfortable in, an environment set up to maintain community, participation, and engagement, is my focus at the beginning of my first year teaching. I chose a carpet with vibrant colors and the alphabet to brightening the mood and reinforcing learning our letters. This carpet will be utilized daily for group lessons, activities, and a safe place to regain focus, or relax with a book. Speaking of books, any great classroom will also have a great book library. I chose a book bundle consisting of both fiction and nonfiction books. Each book will help children link prior knowledge and reinforce learning. Scissors and hands-on activities will be another huge focus in the classroom. I have obtained some materials from my mentor, bless her heart, and have purchased several items on my own. Of course, some materials will be supplied by my school. Unfortunately, I am still in need of quite a bit to get this first year off to a great start. These are just a few of the many things I will need to get my first year of teaching first grade off on a successful path.
