I am so excited to begin my career as a school counselor and I cannot wait to meet my students, their families, and my fellow staff members. I am also so excited to begin the work I have spent the past 2 years being trained to do: whole-heartedly supporting staff, students, and their families in nurturing the personal, social, and emotional growth of our most precious and inspiring resource, our youth.
I stepped into my office for the first time and immediately saw so much potential for the space... a beautiful calm-down corner complete with a soft rug, mermaid pillows, a beanbag chair, and a canopy for students to self-soothe and self-regulate in order to return to their classroom ready to learn. I envisioned having numerous children's books at my fingertips to utilize as teaching and discussion tools in my weekly classroom lessons as well as during small-group and individual counseling sessions. I pictured having numerous relationship building tools on hand, such as coloring books, LEGO bricks, Play Doh, and conversation cubes to help facilitate conversation and positive relationships with my students. I saw a banner of flags strung across my ceiling to communicate to students and families that no matter where they come from, this is a space in which they are welcomed and valued.
My number one goal is to create an inviting space into which my students want to enter. If my office is not kid-friendly, engaging, and inviting, my students will be reluctant to utilize me in times of need. I am so eager to begin my work, and I am so grateful that a resource such as this is available to help young professionals build a space that will positively impact all students and families who enter it.
