As an innovative, first year teacher, I strive to create a comfortable, yet stimulating environment for my students. I have had the opportunity to explore many classrooms and observe student learning within the United States and Finland. This experience has helped me determine the importance of providing students with flexible seating options. I have discovered that by allowing them to have some degree of choice and control over their environment, students feel empowered. Our world is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing place full of choices. By providing flexible seating, we can prepare our students to solve problems and make choices independently within their community and beyond. Just as every learner is unique in their learning types, they are also unique in their preferences on how they are most comfortable while learning. The seating options I have chosen are all very different and will provide students with the benefits of movement and comfort. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. Thus, community-building through increased and intentional emphasis on communication and collaboration is encouraged.
