My teaching philosophy is inspired by my motivation to create a safe learning environment for my students. When choosing my items I thought carefully about each one (based off of my past student-teaching experiences in Massachusetts). I realized that most children need a home away from home to feel safe in the classroom. Especially when students are struggling to find structure or love in their own homes. With the right materials, gadgets, and experiences students are more likely to stay engaged and ready to learn when they feel safe. Therefore, I added items that are meant to foster learning through comfort and positivity. For example, I included flexible seating chairs like beanbags, so my students have the chance to do their work in a seat that is suitable for their needs. This is meant to create optimal focus, giving them the best opportunity to learn and succeed in the classroom. I also added a couple of math manipulatives (like the cash register) that I think are valuable assets to diverse learners. When students are given more hands-on experiences they tend to stay more engaged and are also able to connect their learning to real-world experiences. Finally, I incorporated classroom decor that I will use creatively to make a culturally responsive classroom that looks inviting and welcoming for all students to learn in. With that being said, I have included many items on my list. I know this may seem like both extensive and expensive list, but I am a first-year teacher starting from very little. I truly appreciate any help I can get as I start my voyager as a second-grade teacher. At the heart of each item is an opportunity to make my students smile, and that is something I truly love to do.
