A classroom rug would be an excellent management tool when it comes to personal space and behavior. The colors in the rug will provide a space for each child to call their own. The colors and boxes will also provide ease with transitions and body regulation. This past year, I have had to spend much of my instructional time reminding students to stay in their own space and to keep their bodies to themselves. By having visual space boundaries with colors, boxes, or shapes, my students will know their boundaries and be able to better stay within their own space. Offering my students a space where they can collaborate and work together is crucial for their learning. One specific learning plan an area rug will be useful for is classroom discussions. The place this resource provides is a space for students to collaborate and share ideas. I use think-pair-share and turn and talk several times throughout each week. The think-pair-shares, or turn and talks that happen on an area rug are endless! By having specific areas to sit on the carpet, my students will find turning to talk to their partners easier. Less time will be wasted on trying to figure out who they are supposed to be paired with, thus leading to more time and in-depth conversations.
