Project Lit WHS Chapter: Hydrating the Book Desert
Funded Aug 6, 2021I am in awe of the speed and generosity given to meeting my students reading needs. Just in awe. My heart is so full and I have all of you to thank for that. Please know you are making a difference. Since starting my own classroom library a few years ago, I have had so many students fall in love with books, share their joy with me, and grow as empathetic and thoughtful humans. I can’t wait to see how these diverse AND high interest books will impact them
Thank you for making this happen!!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Steer

Funded Jul 27, 2019This year I have joined a few of my 11th grade ELA level- colleges in ditching the traditional 3-4 teacher chosen class novels. Plenty of research shows that constant fiction reading does amazing things for our student development, but the ability to self select and independently have control over choice has quite a profound impact as well.
My 11th grade students have embarked on a goal to independently read 2,700, or more, pages over the course of the 2019-2020 school year. We hold reading chats every 100 pages and this is the time the check in with me and discuss what they have been reading. Every Friday is fiction Friday and we all read together for 44 mins. It is my favorite day of the week and I can tell most of my kiddos will agree.
It is October and I am already seeing kids on the path to over 5 of their own self selected books. Many have averaged over 400 pages six weeks into the school year.
They come alive with joy or with disgust as they break down for me daily their literary journey. I have a list of like 20 books that I see as a must read now due to their suggestions. I have enjoyed helping guide them and playing matchmaker in their quest for engaging literature and I am loving their enthusiasm when it comes to holding conversations with an adult. It has been amazing to simply walk over to my book shelf and grab a book that I think will speak to them. It is even better when they finish and it has! The waiting list for each book is something the kids fight for and they always remind each other when their due date is approaching.
My updated and fantastic library is a constant hit and necessary tool in this quest to get as many students as possible excited to read.”
