My young kindergarten students learn through play and rich experiences. My favorite, Mr.Rogers, says, "Play is often talked about as if it were relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood." I could not agree more with this quote. Play provides students with an opportunity to practice important social skills, language, and turn taking. Even parents agree with me! When I ask my students parents what kind of learner their child is, they always say, "My child is a hands-on learner". I aim to provide these rich experiences for my students throughout our kindergarten day.
The resources, materials, and supplies that you provide for our classroom will be used daily . Students will interact with these resources to provide experiences that will directly impact their learning targets in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Social Skills. The goal is that students will be given rich resources to provide opportunities for language development through play. For example, when working together on a puzzle, language goals like, "ask and answer questions" and "use describing words" will be met. When students need help with conflict resolution during play, they will use the "calm down" methods described in the conscience discipline method. The fidgets and squish toys will be used for self-regulation.
I have taught in the same school district for 16 years. In that time, I have never been given a budget to update supplies in this way. You are making a direct impact on student achievement and learning through funding this project.
In our classroom,we learn through play as often as possible. We work on math based learning tubs as the students arrive every morning. During differentiated reading instruction, students work on literacy activities with friends.
