"Star Gazing" is our Science department's first-ever STEAM (science, engineering, arts, and math) project that infuses the art of astrophotography with science. Astrophotography is the photography of the night sky, including planets, galaxies, and star trails. Project-based learning will occur within the Science department's Motivational Science Center, the area's only planaterium and observatory, during the department's astronomy course.
The Star Gazing project will engage over 200 ninth through twelfth grade high school astronomy students in a meaningful, hands-on STEAM initiative that expands the current science and astronomy curriculum into astrophotography by the conclusion of the 2019-20 school year. The goal of this project is to encourage students' sense of wonder and curiosity about the universe and the arts through photography of astronomical objects, celestial events, and areas of the night sky.
Several small groups of students within each class will gain experience utilizing the new DSLR programmable camera and wide angle lens to capture star trails through time lapped photos of the stars. As a result, students will receive guidance in the study of the circular star patterns to reinforce the significance of the cyclical motion of stars within the context of the earth's place within the galaxy. In addition, students' hands-on experience using the DSLR camera will increase their exposure to the art of astrophotography and its practical use among scientific researchers.
At the conclusion of the project, each class will produce one series of time lapped star photos. The photo series will be collectively submitted to the Block of Art. The Block of Art is the City of Pottsville's premier showcase of varied art forms on a local level. The submission of the time lapped star photos will increase the community's understanding of the project and the significance of cyclical star patterns.
