What's the one book that changed your outlook on life? Can you name just one or do a list of favorite books come to mind? That's exactly what the English department at LHS is trying to accomplish by creating more active, engaged, and passionate readers. However, despite our best efforts in doing this on our own, we need help from the community to make our goal a reality. Because as we all know, it takes a village... During the 2019-2020 school year, the English department is re-creating our curriculum across all grade levels to focus on developing in our students the passion and ability to become lifelong active readers. The goal of this new approach is to give students a sense of choice over what they read. The time has come to move away from the traditional approach of the teacher-led reading of the "classics". Our approach will give our students a choice in almost everything they read by exposing them to various types of novels from various types of authors. It includes supporting students in their newfound independence by helping them delve into novels that speak to them and where they can be engaged in independent reading and book club activities. The only way to make this happen is to adequately expand our current classroom libraries.
