Materials like noise canceling headphones, weighted blankets, and lamp lighting allow students who struggle with sensory disorders and other disabilities to access education. Weighted blankets and pressure seating have been found to activate the central nervous system which calms students with diverse needs and allows them to return to a calm state. It also empowers them to self advocate and take care of their own needs and their own learning. When my students can take care of their social-emotional and sensory health, they can then focus on their academics and strive to be the academic all-stars I know they are!
