My students need a horseshoe-shaped table so we can better use teacher proximity to encourage the academic growth of our highly active learners. With a horseshoe-shaped table, the teacher sits in the middle of the table and the student group sits along the outside of the table. Each student remains close to the teacher. The teacher is able to focus on every member of the small group because they are always nearby and can watch the learning and offer instant feedback and redirection to students who may otherwise become distracted. Suddenly, the classroom is a smaller place because gentle behavior modification and interventions can be given in a quick way. Students can learn to better focus and to remain on-task because their teacher is never more than an arm's length away. A horseshoe-shaped table will help me as I serve my diverse classroom community made up of kiddos in general ed, special ed/resource room, advanced learners, and students with special gifts such as autism. This table will really impact my fifth graders because we will use it throughout the day across both reading and writing. The horseshoe-shaped table will become a valued resource for the learning of all students as we meet for small group instruction, social skills, learning conferences, and other learning opportunities.
