Safe Space
Funded Aug 21, 2019We want to sincerely thank you for making our "Safe Space" dream area a reality in our classroom. Our newly funded "Safe Space" has had a tremendously positive and comforting impact on the students. Your kindness has given the students a place to go to reflect on a situation before acting upon it. This brief moment allows them to self-regulate and process their emotions to determine the best strategy or skill to handle the situation. Sometimes, the students use the "Safe Space" to just take a break from a tough day.
Your generosity also provided the students with books that they can relate to or learn from, when dealing with difficult scenarios or their emotions. Escaping into a world of reading in a quiet, safe space, even for a brief moment, helps to clear some anger, frustration, or any other negative emotion that may be hindering their learning and/or thought process. Before students can begin the learning process, they need to feel safe. If the student is struggling with a difficult situation, or emotion, they sometimes, will not only shut down, but will completely remove themselves from participating or even trying to learn.
Lastly, the students do not always need to be stressed to enjoy the "Safe Space." Some of the students have to share a bedroom with their siblings or other family member, and they never get the quiet time to just relax and read. These students will use the "Safe Space" as a place to just "chill" and enjoy a good book. Again, thank you for your generosity, it has been an amazing addition for the students.”
With gratitude,
