  • Diversifying Our Literature - Adding Women Writers to Our Curriculum

    Funded Jul 31, 2019

I cannot adequately express my appreciation to you for funding this project. I am elated to be able to share this piece of literature with my students. Diversifying the curriculum to reflect the diversity in our world can help move us into a more positive world.

    Thank you. Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Perkins

This book is a study of a female character who encounters many hardships along her journey to find a life in which she can strive, to which many of my adolescent students will be able to relate. Kingsolver delves into what it is to be a good human, even when there are no good examples around to guide the way, which again, many of my students should find in their own lives. We will search for themes about life found within her pages, as well as discuss the differences found within our American borders among the many different cultures and ideals find inside our country. We will discuss why authors of different genders, cultures, religions, and other variant backgrounds present stories differently. We will discuss why it is important to read from the viewpoints of these varying authors and will couple this book with some of Kingsolver's poetry.
