Students will hear their voices and the voices of indigenous Americans through the poetry of America's Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo. A descendent of storytellers and “one of our finest―and most complicated―poets” (Los Angeles Review of Books), Joy Harjo latest powerful collection opens a dialogue with history that students will step into. This collection will unify our study of poetry and help students connect to something real and tangible in this time of distance learning. It will also help us to broaden our understanding of the American experience, and allow our own indigenous students to see themselves reflected in the works of value we study—something that rarely, if ever, happens, especially in such honest, inspirational and beautiful terms.
