Washington, D.C. is home to my amazing 8th graders. I had the chance to teach these students in 6th grade too and know that they are avid readers. These students are consistently seeking out new books on their own, asking about new books, and they deserve new and engaging texts! Children need to read books where they can see themselves in their characters, diverse libraries are so important. Reading allows people, no matter their age, to explore new worlds, learn new things, and immerse themselves in new experiences. When you see yourself in a character, you can truly begin to relate and it opens up a whole new world of experiences for you. Books spark so many things for people. All readers, no matter the color of their skin, where they come from, their gender, or anything else, deserve to see themselves in a book! Thank you for helping create a classroom library full of diverse characters, diverse experiences, and diverse authors!
