The purpose of this project can best be summed up with this quote by Brooke Brown, a teacher and Makerspace pioneer: "A Makerspace is an area of the classroom that is reserved for creative exploration, engineering, tinkering, inventing, and purposeful play. In a Makerspace, children have opportunities to discover, assemble, problem solve, construct, test, and explore using divergent, "outside the box" thinking." These are all skills that will be of great value to my first graders as students and in the real world. In college, I double-majored in education and STEM and was excited to infuse STEM into my classroom from the start. I began to introduce STEM to my students last year, but lacked storage space and many of the materials I was interested in sharing with them, so we were unable to really learn and explore. With these materials, I will be able to challenge my students in a new way. They will be able to learn about robotics and expand their knowledge of coding. They will work on their problem solving skills and will be able to learn new concepts in a hands on way. They will see the connections between literacy and STEM using various books for "Storybook STEM" projects. My goal as a teacher is to inspire my students to love learning, and I know that incorporating more STEM in my classroom will do just that.
