The very first unit that we go over in 8th grade science is “genetics”, covering cells and their reproduction. How in the world can you possibly teach a unit on cells without microscopes? Students learn best when they can see or touch something themselves. Describing the way something looks is alright, but if I could actually set a microscope in front of my students and let them see it, that would make a world of difference! I have requested a class set of microscopes. I could do an entire assessment just from a microscope. There would not have to be a multiple choice test where my students have to imagine what a cell looks like. They could actually see it!
