Educational games used within the classroom environment allow for increased engagement and motivation of students. Furthermore, students are using teamwork and communication skills to problem solve, while also promoting (hopefully) positive sportsmanship. They're learning without realizing it! Currently, I have no educational board games in my classroom. I do math centers and guided reading every day and would love to use these games as a supplemental material for my students during this time. It's something they can work on independently, in a small group, while I work with other students. These games are not a replacement of curriculum, but simply a way to further learning and comprehension for my students. I have seen how students can often understand difficult concepts when the textbook is no longer in front of them and something "on their level" is presented. That's all I want to give my students--a chance to learn using materials that will best meet their needs.
