My students love having a voice and choice about what they read. Unfortunately, many of my students aren't able to continue this enthusiasm for reading at home. They have one library book that is checked out each week as well as one book they are able to take home from my small selection of "take home" books. Most of these books are not the popular, current books that they enjoy reading. They beg to take home the books from their school book boxes but unfortunately, these are books that are required to be kept at school. Many of my students tell me that they have very few and sometimes no books of their own at home. My project would provide durable bags for each child that can be filled with 5-7 high quality, high-interest books that can be taken home and kept for the entire week. The books have been chosen from award winning authors and represent a variety of genres as well as titles that reflect the diverse backgrounds, history and living situations of my students. These bags would help provide equity by giving all of my students access to reading materials outside of the classroom regardless of background or living situation. They would also promote our school goal of encouraging family engagement as students would be able to share these books with their younger siblings and family members.
