Rising second graders envision their new classroom as space where they will feel a sense of belonging and ownership. In my classroom where space is somewhat limited, the carpet area will add comfortable floor space and offer scholars additional options for flexible seating. It is critically important that I offer choices, within limits, to help promote a sense of responsibility and self-management. As an ELL teacher, my scholars will also spend a considerable amount of carpet time listening to read-alouds, doing choral readings, and partnering with a neighbor to exercise their comprehension skills. An integral part of this will involve writing. What a joy it will be to have their most used tools, -- their nameplate and pencil(s) -- both, neatly and visibly contained. What a joy it will be to watch them leave the carpet, return to their seats, without wasting time searching for their pencil. What a joy it will be to see them begin their writing assignment without wasting time sliding their materials to either side in order to reference their nameplates for letter formation and/or spelling cues. Ideally, my classroom will be one that promotes creative thought and exceptional scholarly work...without stealing my joy.
