My students are so excited to read new books and learn about the characters inside the pages. As a first year teacher, my classroom library does not have a large selection for them to choose from and the books I do have don't feature characters that reflect their lives and their experiences. I would like for my students to be able to see themselves mirrored in the books on our shelves. Readers engage more deeply with literacy when they can relate to the stories and the struggles and experiences of the characters. Providing my students with stories and characters that reflect the diversity of our classroom will encourage them to engage with literacy and think deeply about the story.
