Many times our students haven't learned how to cope with their feelings of anger, frustrations, and unease when they become overwhelming. Their previous experiences have taught them a default of acting out because that will remove them from the situation and remove them from the stress. A focus of our program is to teach them coping strategies to work through the stress and anger positively without disrupting the learning environment. The end goal is to have them choose to return to the learning environment with minimal disruption to others. A sensory room would give them the space to take a break when things get hard. This room will provide access to exercise equipment, sensory fidgets, puzzles, coloring materials, etc. There will also be a calming room with alternate lighting and comfortable seating. These interventions will be strategically used to help students find a safe outlet for when their emotions are getting too big for them to handle. Hopefully, this will lead to a greater sense of self-worth and self-control for our students. By providing these choices of environments, students will be empowered to work through their feelings in a positive, productive, and healthy way.
