Students today don't come into a traditional Algebra class and listen to a lecture for the 70 minute period as we did in a high school. Some of my lower performing students will have math class for 140 minutes a day which is a long time for be listening in a traditional setting. I believe all students can be successful if I can spend enough time with each student and cater to their individual needs. I believe that students can assist each other when they are put in groups based on knowledge of a particular topic as well. With a new teaching strategy called quads, students will be ability grouped based on a pre-assessment for a particular unit. The flexible seating that I am requesting will provide a separate physical space for my three groups to work on different and necessary skills based on their individual needs. The lowest ability will be able to work with me as much as needed. The other 2 groups will be reviewing prerequisite skills or possibly working on enrichment. I will attempt to work at each student's own pace. The small groups will also be grouped strategically for my special ed students to work with non-special ed students, and my English Language Learners students to work with English speakers so the kids can help each other too. The flexible seating stools and yoga balls will also keep students awake and balanced as they cannot get too comfortable becoming sleepy. It will also force students to concentrate on their own knowledge and contributing while in their small group.
