I have been working on a kids cookbook for Cooking in The Kindergarten Classroom. Last year I started a trial Friday Food Fun Day by integrating recipes in the classroom to help the children learn all the basics of cooking. I struggled with cooking supplies and would buy some or haul supplies from home. Parents would provide some of the ingredients but we needed the cooking utensils and supplies. Our school is old and the supplies we have are old, too. We had a science lab but had to give it up for a classroom. This project will provide some of the items we need to be more effective. Each cooking lesson has these skills: social skills, wait time, patience, math (measuring, adding, time, etc.), reading with literature, science (chemical and physical changes, reactions when you mix ingredients), sequencing, following directions, kitchen safety, poems and songs for each lesson. And, of course, fun! I asked the kids at the end of the year what they remembered most from the year and it was the cooking on Fridays. Kids need these skills in the classroom which will hopefully carry over to their homes and what they need for the future.
