I inherited a classroom in an alternative school with an extensive class library, but lacking in class sets of many novels I teach. While I have access to an online database which houses some of the works I teach, it is difficult to hold a student's attention while they stare at a screen, and even more difficult to perform the plays we read when everyone is holding a computer and scrolling to find their parts. I am also in a building with spotty wifi that often renders my online works useless. In the past two years, I have had to borrow class sets of works from other schools, find pdf files online of these works, and even read novels off my cell phone when the wifi went out. I also have many students in need of differentiated instruction, and it is difficult to reach them when I do not have multiple means of delivering their instruction, such as books in print to supplement reading aloud or even just enough copies for every student to get one for themselves. My students deserve everything they need in order to succeed, and having full sets of novels in their curriculum is a great place to start.
