Research on Deep Learning shows us that students need a voice and a choice in school. A big part of building a classroom environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, citizenship and character is organizing a space that matches the 21st century learning needs of students today. My Title I students need a learning space that sends the message, "You deserve the best." I want to help create a space that honors my students' specific and individual learning needs by providing flexible seating options. I expect my students to be able to communicate, collaborate, and create each day. This is very difficult to accomplish in a traditional classroom full of single desks and hard-backed chairs. I am not preparing my students to work in factories. I want to get rid of the "bells and cells" feel of the traditional classroom by creating a space that is full of life and choice-- a space that promotes 21st century learning. By increasing options for seating, students will: 1) Feel they are in a welcoming environment that inspires; 2) Be able to move, collaborate, and create and choose based on their own preferences as the norm; and, 3) Have a classroom designed for the present day which prepares them for the future environments they will be working in as members of a global community.
