Making Fluency Fun!
Funded Mar 7, 2011I can't thank you enough for your generous donations to my project Making Fluency Fun. My class has enjoyed practicing reading using the interactive Cd's and write and wipe fluency passages. It means a lot to my students to have extra resources outside of the regular curriculum to encourage and motivate them to read.
In fact, I have three boys who faithfully stayed after school to practice because they wanted to improve their fluency. They loved using the write and wipe boards to correct themselves and keep track of their words per minute. They were able to self-monitor and correct their fluency and accuracy without any teacher feedback because the Cd's helped them track their progress. Over the last few months we've been using this program, the boys' fluency has increased greatly.
Once again, thank you so much for your support of my classroom. I know that these materials will continue to benefit future students because they have greatly improved the fluency of my current students over just a few short months.”
With gratitude,

Math and Interactive Learning
Funded Dec 7, 2010Thank you all again for helping fund my project for a Dell Laptop. I received the laptop over a month ago and it has been a great asset to my classroom. It is serving many uses in my classroom on a daily basis from showing math lessons and videos to previewing story vocabulary during language arts. It is providing great visuals for my diverse group of learners. In addition, I have started using it for social studies powerpoints, pictures, and videos as well.
During math time the videos capture their attention and show concepts in different ways. There are visual and auditory cues that provide opportunities for children to ask and answer questions through guided practice. The students can follow along with their math lessons and I can guide them through problems with the video components. This really keeps them engaged and supports concept development.
Prior to reading stories in the student anthologies, we are using the laptop to preview story vocabulary and see images of camouflage for our Look Again Unit. My students get really excited when they see pictures and they start to make connections with the visuals and the new words they are learning. For the unit opener I used the laptop to show powerpoints of camouflage and it helped spark a discussion of our new theme.
Thank you again for supporting my students' learning. This is such a great learning tool for my students and I am grateful to all of you for bringing technology to my classroom.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Afra
