Students will use and benefit from these resources not only by getting better at volleyball but more importantly they will be able to learn a lot about teamwork, working through adversity, pushing through, learning how to deal with setbacks, learning how far dedication and hard work can help you grow in and out of the classroom, etc. Athletically, this will allow students to focus on fundamentals of volleyball such as passing, setting, serving, spiking, tracking the ball, passing with a purpose, etc to eventually allow the girls to be more competitive in their respective schools across the district. However, this project will give the girls the tools necessary to succeed not only on the court, but also off the court. Volleyball is not solely a place for students to grow in skill. For many athletes, sports is an escape from the pressures of home and school. I have had athletes who deal with divorce at home, who deal with not having enough food some days, who deal with "nagging" parents, who deal with verbal abuse at home, and who have to avoid drugs in their neighborhood. If students want to continue playing volleyball post-season, many have to pay high fees to get into a club league, many students in the schools I have served are unable to pay. I have had the privilege of partnering with a church that is willing to let us use their gym for my mission to give students an afterschool activity where they can escape from their realities in a healthy way. I hope to eventually start helping the students sign up for volunteer activities throughout the city as a group overtime, mentor one another through volleyball and navigating high school in general, and personally help them in whatever way I can through continual mentorship.
