The Cross-Categorical Behavioral program exists to allow students who need greater assistance to participate in a typical school setting and interact with general education peers. My students are considered special education because they have behaviors that interfere with the learning environment and prevent them from participating in a general education classroom. Often, they struggle to concentrate for extended periods of time, or control excess energy. This results in difficulty with completing tasks in a timely manner and remaining in a designated area. Providing my students the option of where they can work gives them a feeling of empowerment and helps encourage diligence and deliberation. Sometimes all it takes is a change of location to help get them back on track. I want them to view the classroom as a place of understanding and compromise, and flexible seating is a good place to start. When they walk through the door on day one, I want them to see a place where they can learn, discover, and collaborate, all around the class!
