When learning rigorous subjects such as Math and Science, I feel it is important for students to feel productive and purposeful in every activity and assessment. I want my students to enjoy learning topics that affect them in their daily lives, and as they record observations, research topics, or use familiar materials in new ways, they're constructing meaning. Hands-on projects engage kinesthetic learners who need movement to learn best. They also engage students who are auditory learners, who talk about what they're doing, and visual learners, who have the opportunity to see what everyone else is creating. For social learners, the time spent in small group conversation will strengthen their knowledge. Using STEM journals to observe and document the weather over the course of a week, having students build their own cars and measure how far they travel on various ramps, and/or using a Solar System Science Viewer to allow students to see a up close visual of the sun, moon, stars, and planets are just a small snapshot of how I plan to engage my learners and have an everlasting impact on how they see these topics.
