With these novels, I will have the ability to tap into my advanced learner's creativity to put them in charge of their learning during our unit about the Kingdoms and Cultures West Africa and Imperial China. One way the novels will be used is to have an exemplar for the project based learning activity we will be attempting in our study. Students will be reading the novel as an example of narrative writing that they will then imitate in creating their own stories of the history of West Africa and Imperial China. The author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is an admitted vintage photo collector which he then turned into the inspiration for the text of the novel. Ransom Riggs used photos he had collected throughout the years to create the story of Miss Peregrine and the plot twists that accompany the novel. We will be using this as our model in our attempt at a Humanities department within our school where our history teacher will provide photos from West Africa and Imperial China, and I, as the English teacher will provide the information for the writing. Together we will have the students create a written and visual history of the unit of study, where the photos we give them are the inspiration for the plot they will write. Through this process, students will experience narrative writing outside of a "typical" essay format and gain an understanding of the innovations and achievements from West Africa and China. Your generous donations will help my students tap into their creativity and explore 7th-grade history like no text book can offer. My students will see the writing process, read a high-interest, engaging novel, cover a unit of social studies, and most importantly have fun with their learning!
