Everyday my students love going to stations. During station time, they practice skills such as learning their letters sounds and names. It is a time they get to interact with friends and develop social skills. They write and draw in journals, retell stories in the library, and build castles in the block center. This coming year, I will introduce a light table, where they can manipulate translucent letters to build their names and sight words. If you were to walk into my classroom during station time, you might think "These kids are just playing", but in an early childhood classroom, play is learning. Students drawing in shaving cream are practicing fine motor skills. Students manipulating small toys are sorting initial sounds in words. These experiences create hands-on concrete learning that is both engaging and important to their development. By supporting our project, you will be helping us create a learning environment that encourages play and curiosity through the use of developmentally appropriate materials. The journals will be used to extend stories and allow students an opportunity to be expressive. The light table set will be used to help them learn how to spell their names and those of their friends. The rhyming houses will help them to hear sounds in words, which is so important to early reading skills. The items purchased through this project, will help my students to develop a love of learning that will last through their life.
