When you think of a classroom library, you think of a place where children go and read comfortably and quietly in a space that's special and unique to the classroom and while that is true, it serves as so much more. The library in the classroom is the backbone of what goes on in the classroom. Much of what goes on in the classroom happens around the resources and space within the classroom library. The classroom library supports literary instruction, helps students to learn about books, provides a central location for classroom resources, provides opportunities for independent reading, and it's a place where students can interact and visit with each other about their favorite books. Several studies show that the classroom library helps students in reading achievements. In order for this to happen, students need to have access to grade-level, or around grade-level, books they are interested in reading. By supplying my students with a variety of books in my classroom library, I will be able to reach a variety of academic reading needs and build on those the children already have.
