A "soft start" in a classroom is a research-based method of learning that allows students to learn in an inviting, inspiring, and choice-driven environment from the moment they enter our classroom doors. It will truly set the tone of our day! A soft start is a calm, reflective practice of individualized learning. Students enter the classroom, completing must-do procedures such as unpacking and choosing lunch for the day, before moving around the room to making a morning choice. Some examples of choices are STEM challenges, art activities, conversation starters, puzzles, board games, or simply reading or drawing in a comfortable spot. We will add to these as the year goes on and our classroom community expands interests. This method replaces typical morning work, that often is a barrier for many of our students who require a more calming and empowering way to start the day. Research shows that soft starts make a huge difference for our students who have experienced trauma, a growing population in public schools. Soft starts give children the opportunity to start their day with what they need and desire. Soft starts will transform my 3rd grade classroom by bringing in choice and voice. I am so excited to emphasize social and emotional learning with my beautiful and bright students this year!
