My first graders are learning to read and write, but they also love to move! I would like to give them the opportunity to do both at the same time by allowing them to choose to use a stability ball for a seat. My experience with previous classes has shown me that students have increased engagement in learning activities when they are using a stability ball to sit. Researcher have also found this to be the case: "Results of the stability ball intervention revealed increased levels of attention, decreased levels of hyperactivity, and increased time on task and in seat or on ball. Findings from the social validity questionnaire demonstrated that teachers preferred the stability balls over chairs." (Fedewa and Erwin) I would like to increase focus and engagement for all of my students while they work to grow as readers and writers!
