All students enjoy the opportunity to engage their thinking in new ways. I feel that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities allow my students to explore the world around them in less teacher-directed ways. My students deserve the materials to incorporate STEM into their lives. My goal for this project is two-fold: 1) I will set up Friday STEM Afternoon, where my students will be given specific tasks to use their STEM Materials for. I love to connect reading to STEM, so we will explore the new books I am asking for, to understand some basic scientific concepts, as well as use Fiction Literature. For example, the children can build a bridge for The Three Billy Goats Gruff to escape from the troll. Although I will assign the specific 'task', my students will then work alone or with a partner to discover different ways to create the bridge. 2) My students will use the new materials in an independent station, giving them the ability to hone their creative skills and discover how things work by themselves.
