Send Another Kid to Environmental Science Camp
Funded Aug 7, 2019Your generous donation helped our fifth grade students, who otherwise would not have had the opportunity, go to Camp Bournedale in Plymouth, MA this year. Since fifth grade is the year that the two elementary schools merge, the children had a great time getting to know other students, staff, and chaperones. They also had ample opportunities to bond with new friends. Project Adventure, Line Dancing, Karaoke with friends, making medallions, and Recreation Time provided opportunities to build confidence and develop new friendships. Cabin time before lights out was an experience few had had before, since many had never stayed overnight away from family. Following the tradition of many former students, they will treasure those memories as some of the best times in their lives.
The classes at Camp Bournedale relate directly to the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering standards in a fun and meaningful way. The students experienced hands-on activities in Marine Lab where they could dissect a shark and handle animals in the salt water touch tank. They also learned about the impact of humans and human made products such as plastic, pesticides and fertilizer on animals in our waterways. This inspires learning back at school as students study environmental science, recycling, and animal life in their fifth grade science classes. Other students were inspired by the Rocketry class where they learned the science behind how rockets fly. Then they designed and tested out their own prototype of a rocket. They also had the opportunity to build another rocket with a partner and launch it.
Thank you for making these wonderful learning experiences possible for boys and girls in our town; helping to carry on a 30 year tradition for 5th graders in our city. Your generous donation made sure that every student, no matter what their family's current economic situation was, could participate in this year.”
With gratitude,
