I have requested 100 copies of Lorraine Hansberry's Raisin in the Sun. We have been experiencing this play with our juniors for many years. Unfortunately, we only have 35 copies of the play, and more than 300 juniors at our high school. Not only do students love this play, but its content allows us to have important discussions about: race, slurs (origins and transformations), wealth & poverty, family, dignity, loss, abortion, dreams, and so much more. Having more than 130 copies will allow each junior teacher to provide students with their own books to take home. This is critical because we do have some issues with tardiness and absenteeism. Oftentimes students are not able to get to school, and being able to keep up with reading and assignments at home is so beneficial. We will be taking the juniors and seniors to a live performance of A Raisin in the Sun at the Yale Repertory Theatre during the 2019-2020 school year. The English Department is thrilled to offer this opportunity to our students, as many of our teens have never experienced live theater. I look forward to giving every junior at our high school the opportunity to read one of the greatest American plays of all time; I also can't wait to see their reactions as they watch this classic drama played out on stage by the incredible Yale Repertory actors. These are the experiences that high school students remember for the rest of their lives, and I thank you for your consideration as you ponder being a part of this key moment in their development.
